The Buckeye Classic

"BSAC once conducted one of the premier contests in the nation. Tom Dillion spearheaded the effort to conduct the contest in Toledo in conjunction with the John Carlisle Toy Show. This contest called the Buckeye Classic and was quite a success and actually was my first contact with BSAC, before I moved to Columbus.

However, the club lost the Toledo venue and tried to conduct the contest at a toy show in Columbus. That particular toy show was not a destination for modelers, the contest lost its impact after a couple of years and the club decided not to conduct it any longer."

(Mike Newport)

Some years later, the club thought about throwing it's hat in the ring and putting on a contest again.

A few members ventured out to contests throughout Ohio and surrounding states, taking in the do's and don'ts on putting on a successful model contest.

With tons of promotion for the contest, the Buckeye Classic was held on March 27, 2011 at the Ramada Hotel Plaza & Conferencs Center on Sinclair Rd, just off of I-71.

The show turned out to be a success except for a few minor glitches. At the following club meeting, with the contest in the history books, it was decided to run a second contest the next year.

At the 3rd Annual Buckeye Classic, we brought an added bonus; The OHIO Challenge. A contest in it's own right. The rules were a specific model was chosen and any Ohio model club members could build it anyway they chose, as long as you can tell what the original kit was. The winner would get a huge trophy to take home for a year, but had to return the trophy at the contest in hopes of winning it again. At first, the OHIO Challenge was only open to members of model clubs in Ohio. With the popularity of the OHIO Challenge, it was decided that it would now be open to anyone to enter. Now the winner will get a smaller version of the trophy to keep, with the original staying in Columbus and the winner's name on a nameplate on the trophy.

The AMT AMC Gremlin was the first one, won by BSAC's Rob Smorey.

2014 saw the Buckeye Classic move into its new home; the Franklin County Fairgrounds in Hilliard, Ohio.

The second OHIO Challenge build was the new Revell '57 Ford, won by Greg Taylor

The third was the '40 Ford, any version, any kit manufacturer. Tony Dean won that year.

Eric Ritz took home the honors in the 2016 OHIO Challenge with his Revell '70 HEMI Cuda.

Eric Ritz, once again, won the OHIO Challenge with the Revell 1929 Ford.

The 8th Annual Buckeye Classic will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2018.
